These prisoners were sent to the basement, whereas the remaining part of the camp was left to lie down and sleep at night. They would put in hours of standing at night and the following morning--they would go back to work having had no sleep whatsoever. This would occur over a number of days consecutively.
When the Body Breaks The human body can not long live without rest.
- Swollen Legs: Since they did not sit down, their legs would fill up and cause them a lot of pain.
- Confusion: Brain cannot work properly without sleep. The men would get dizziness and forget.
- Weakness: They would later on in life fall on the ground during their work as their muscles and hearts just give up.
Why Did They Do It? The Nazi utilized these cells to stomp people. They wanted to demonstrate to the prisoners that they possessed no authority both to sit down and to stand up. It was a means of making man like wood or stone.
The Lesson Today Most of these cells were burned down by the Nazis at the war termination to conceal their actions. But history does not forget. The reason we are telling this story is to teach the world that it is the right of every human being to dignity, to rest and to be treated with mercy.
