He portrayed a German soldier in the story of American prisoners of war confined in a German camp. The remarkable irony was that Curt Lowens-born Curt Lowenstein-was himself a Jewish Holocaust survivor. Undoubtedly, his lived experience colored the role he played. Curt Lowenstein was born in East Prussia, now part of Poland. His family lived a relatively comfortable life until 1933, when the rise of antisemitism and the Nazis changed everything. Believing they would be safer in a larger Jewish community, the Lowensteins moved to Berlin. At first, Curt's father, a lawyer, managed to find work, but the situation quickly deteriorated.
