"Genovese syndrome"

"Genovese syndrome" A decidedly atypical woman for those years due to her independent lifestyle, Kitty Genovese lived in New York far from her family with a partner with whom she lived. On March 13, 1964, Kitty finished work late and returned home by car, around three in the morning. When she got out of the car, she found herself faced by a man, Winston Moseley, who chased her and stabbed her twice with a knife before running away following the screams of a witness who, however, did not intervene directly. Free from her attacker, Kitty, wounded and limping, tried to run away toward home: the neighbors who saw her dragging herself along the street thought she was drunk or very tired and did not take an interest in her. When she realized that she would not be able to reach her home due to her wounds, Genovese, chased by Moseley who had gone back specifically to look for her and finish her off, took refuge in the entrance hall of a building. She asked for help again, also becaus...

What innocent-seeming picture is actually heartbreaking?

On the afternoon of June 9, 1912, a group of travellers made their way through Villisca, Iowa, United States as was usual. One of those was a seemingly unassuming middle-aged man with a beard who posed with two children. The identity of the one on the left is no longer known with certainty, but the one on the right was ten-year-old Mary Katherine Moore, who lived with her parents and three siblings in a neaby house. Later that night, she and her brothers went to a childrens’ daycare where her mother volunteered while the father attended church. Eventually they chose to return to their residence, bringing Mary’s two friends, Lena and Ina Stillinger along with her. According to later reports, Mary Peckham — an elderly neighbour who was regarded as a “second grandmother” to the Moore children — heard screaming coming from the Moore family home in the middle of the night but was too scared to get out of bed until sunrise at 7 AM. She then noticed that none of the occupants had go...

On December 28, 1992, Katie Beers was lured away from their home in Bay Shore, New York, by a friend of her family, John Esposito. It was two days before her 10th birthday. He took her to his home, and for more than two weeks she was locked up in the underground bunker while being frequently raped. The 6-foot by 7-foot bunker was located under his garden and accessed via a 6-foot long tunnel. The entrance was a 200-pound concrete door hidden by a bookcase in his office. The bunker was fitted with a toilet and a CCTV camera. His initial plan was to keep Katie captive for the rest of her life and have children with her. In December 2003, Joyce Vincent died of an apparent asthma attack in her North London flat. The television remained on

In December 2003, Joyce Vincent died of an apparent asthma attack in her North London flat. The television remained on The mail continued to be delivered. Her rent was set to be automatically deducted from her bank account. Days passed and no one noticed she had died. Those days turned into weeks and the weeks into months. There were large bins on the side of the building next to her flat, so the neighbours never gave much thought to the foul odor they could smell. The block was full of noisy children and teenagers and no one questioned the constant hum of the TV noise in the background. Eventually, Joyce's bank account ran dry. Her landlord sent her letters of demand. These, like the others, simply fell into the mix on her floor. They received no reply. Finally, with more than six months of back rent, the landlord obtained a court order to forcibly remove her from the premises. The bailiffs broke down the door and only then was her body discovered. At that point, it was January 20...
