The 'blonde poison' Jew who betrayed her people to help the Nazis: The story of Stella Goldschlag who lured 3,000 Jews to their doom - even after her family were sent to Auschwitz A Jewish woman, nicknamed 'blonde poison,' lured 3,000 to their doom as she collaborated with the Nazis, even after her family were killed at Auschwitz.  Stella Goldschlag was a beautiful, blue-eyed girl, raised in a middle-class Jewish family, who turned traitor to help the gestapo capture Jews living in Berlin's underground. The beauty showed a voracious appetite for her role, luring men to the bedroom, snaring widows at funerals and turning in her old classmates.  Although she originally agreed to work for the Nazis to protect her family, she continued to do so even after they had been killed at Auschwitz.  Stella Goldschlag agreed to work for the Nazis as a 'catcher' while her family were sent to their deaths at Auschwitz in 1943 Stella Goldschlag agreed to work for the Nazis a...

Psychiatric patient restrained in a chair, 1869

Psychiatric patient restrained in a chair, 1869 The man seen here is a criminal, who was being restrained while having his picture taken. I couldn't find anything about him online, such as his age, name or mental health records, but assuming that he was in an asylum, it can be presumed he had some mental or behavioural issues. However, I was able to find that this man was in the West Riding Lunatic Asylum. This was a mental health facility in Yorkshire England, which was opened in 1818 and closed in 1995. It has the capacity for 150 patients, but by the 1860s, it had over 1,000. Why the man is being restrained is unknown. It may be due to not wanting to get his picture taken, or it was therapy at the time. As mental disorders were so poorly understood at the time, doctors would use many different restraining techniques as they believed it would calm the patient or prevent violent episodes.  Continue reading

The Torture of Isabel Rodriguez

The Torture of Isabel Rodriguez Isabel Rodríguez, also known as Isabel Rodrigo, was a Spanish nurse, explorer, and doctor of the 16th century. She was the "mother" of 16th century military medicine When author Anna Lanyon looked for information about Malinche in the Arvchivo Historico of Mexico City, she found a land grant for a woman named Isabel Rodriguez. She had come with Cortés from Cuba to take care of wounded soldiers. The records called her "the famous woman who cured wounds during the wars of Conquest." These land grants were common, and Malinche, herself, received woodland beside the wall of Chapultepec after she was married to Juan Xaramillo. In addition to her son with Cortés, Martin, Malinche had a daughter, Maria, with Xaramillo. Other than these few notes, there is little on the women involved in the conquest. She was a member of the expedition of Hernán Cortés to Mexico. Born in Spain, her date of birth and of death are unknown. She w...
