On August 6, 1890, at Auburn Prison, New York, William Kemmler became the first person to be sent to the chair. He was convicted of murdering his lover, Matilda Ziegler, with an axe. After he was strapped in, a charge of approximately 700 volts was delivered for only 17 seconds before the current failed. Although witnesses reported smelling burnt clothing and charred flesh, Kemmler was far from dead, and a second shock was prepared. The second charge was 1,030 volts and applied for about two minutes, whereupon smoke was observed coming from the head of Kemmler, who was clearly deceased. An autopsy showed that the electrode attached to his back had burned through to the spine. Electrocution as a humane means of execution was first suggested in 1881 by Dr. Albert Southwick, a dentist. Shocking footage captured the moment a little girl drowned in a swimming pool while two adults stood nearby.
The tragic accident happened at a children’s swimming pool in Jieyang City, China, when the four-year-old girl in a tiny swimming ring tipped upside down.
Her little legs are seen kicking feverishly as she tries to right herself.
One woman can be seen eating food, while a second is changing another child. Both of them fail to notice what is going on.
With her head submerged in water no one can hear her screams.
Incredibly, the woman in the black dress changing the child then takes her over to the swimming pool and again fails to notice what is going on.
She places the child in the water and then leaves.
The woman eating also turns round but again notices nothing, and then walks away.
It looks as if the new child in the swimming pool notices that something is amiss, but apparently fails to raise the attention of the adults and it was later confirmed that the child left upside down had died.
Local police have confirmed that the child died in the swimming pool, but did not comment on the identities of the two women or whether they were staff or relatives of the child who died.
