It has remained isolated for hundreds of thousands of years. No one had ever seen it before, then in May 2020, a small body of water was discovered in Carlsbad Caverns National Park, New Mexico.
It is located in one of the largest and deepest caves in the world and was discovered 213 meters deep. The bacteria that live in the water have "evolved without the presence of humans".
The body of water is surrounded by white rocks that give it an almost fairy-tale appearance. According to the leader of the expedition, Max Wisshak, the water is actually crystalline and would be of rain origin, which then infiltrated into the limestone above.
We still don't even have a clear idea of what the biology might be. Now scientists are working to understand if there are microorganisms inside that can help us understand the origin of life on Earth.
