A seventeen year old girl named Lisa McVey had been abused at home for many years, sometimes even molested at gunpoint by a relative. She was ready to end her life, and began writing a suicide note explaining why she did what she set out to do…
The very next day — the day she decided would be her last — McVey was kidnapped by a man named Bobby Joe Long, a serial killer with ten previous victims.
McVey decided she would talk her way to freedom, and was able to persuade Long to let her go. She made sure to be sociable, friendly, agreeable and evoke pity by telling him she was an only child and her father was terribly ill.
It worked, and McVey was released. She then went home and committed to memory all the details she remembered of her abductor, his house, his car and the directions they took. Despite having been blindfolded, her descriptions were so accurate they ultimately led to his capture. She’d also deliberately left fingerprints all over his house in unguarded moments — she’d been held for sixteen hours — in order to tie herself to the scene of the crime in case she didn’t make it out alive.
Lisa McVey’s impressive recall and the way she kept her cool under intense pressure got her compliments by the police officers who worked on her case. She later joined the police force and currently works as a resource officer, giving talks to schools and helping children recognize signs of danger.
