Let me tell you the story of Tatiane Spitzner and how the footage of her death shocked the world and opened many eyes to what domestic violence really looks like.
Tatiana is a 29-year-old lawyer who lives with her husband Luis Filipe in Guarapuava. Looking at the photo of the couple, they look like a happy and loving couple:
But behind these photos lies a truly shocking reality that ends in a horrific way.
On July 22, 2018, the couple went out partying and when they returned (around 2.30am) they were seen parking their vehicle in front of the building.
They talked for a while and then her husband suddenly hit her three times, with considerable force, on the head. She then tried to run and open the door, but her husband forced her to close it and put the seat belt around her neck, while pulling her hair and punching her head repeatedly.
Then they went to the garage, her husband parked the car, got out, dragged her out and pushed her against the car. Then punched her in the throat causing her to pass out and fall to the ground. As she lay there, her husband parked the car and two minutes later he came back and started kicking her until she woke up and stood up.
When she started to regain consciousness, she decided to run away and she started running towards the elevator as her husband chased after her.
They both managed to get into the elevator and he clicked the button for the ground floor instead of the fourth floor where they lived.
when the elevator opened on the ground floor she tried to run, and managed to get out but her husband grabbed her and forced her back inside and pinned her against the wall until the doors closed again.
When they reached the fourth floor, she put her hands on the side of the elevator to try to stop her husband and force his way out, but to no avail. When they left the elevator, that was the last time Tatiane was seen alive.
When they arrived at their apartment, neighbors heard her screaming for help but did nothing. Less than 15 minutes later, cameras outside the building recorded her body falling to the floor.
Her husband claims that she jumped on her own, but that is clearly a lie because in the video we can see that she did not try to cover her face or even scream and was already lifeless when she fell.
Her husband came down to pick her up and took her to the elevator where he, covered in blood, began to caress her face and cover her breasts. He took her back to their apartment and then returned and cleaned the blood off the elevator, before leaving.
Dunia Rampazzo, the prosecutor in the case, stated:
Our investigation proved that the victim was killed inside the apartment due to asphyxiation and her body was thrown over the apartment balcony. We believe the accused then took the elevator to the ground floor and retrieved Tatiane's body, bringing it back to the apartment in the elevator.
We suspect that before he was killed, Luis subjected his wife to prolonged physical violence. This was not suicide, but femicide. The perpetrator then tried to escape by car.
The case had some delays due to covid, but in May this year, he was sentenced to 31 years in prison.
If you know someone who has an abusive partner or if you are in one, please get help. His death cannot be wasted, and may this inspire those who need inspiration to get out while they can.
