The hinterkaifeck axe murders -1922

It is one of the most gruesome murder mysteries of all time.

To explain in a nutshell, there was a small town named Hinterkaifeck in Germany, and there lived a family in a farmstead, consisting of parents, their 3 wards and a maid . They were all living peacefully until the housemaid started feeling something spooky happening in the house. She claimed that she heard creepy noises and random scratching from the attic when the house is silent. So she quits her job accusing that the house is haunted.

The story doesn’t end there, but only begins. After that, the father notices that some newspaper unfamiliar to the house were kept within. And then the keys of the house goes missing. Most chillingly, as it was winter, the family noticed footprints showing people entering the house but no prints were found leaving the house. Time passes by and a new maid joins the family to serve them.

The true horror is unvieled on that very night. All the members of the family, except the little baby (including the new maid) were brought out to the barn, killed with a sharp instrument gruesomely (I’d like to spare the details). The scene was so brutal that the girl child of the family was found to have plucked her own hairs due to extreme fear while witnessing her parents gruesomely murdered. The bodies were stacked on top of one another in the barn, and the baby was killed on his cradle. The murder instrument was then found to be a pickaxe used by the family, but the murderes were never found.

The very eery detail of this murder is, even after 2 days of the murders, the farm animals were fed and the neighbours observed smoke rising from the chimney, inferring that the killer(s) stayed there even after this brutal act. The neighbours after 3 days went to investigate to check on the family as they weren’t coming outdoors and became the first ones to witness their bodies in the barn.

Joanna Szydłowska traded her bread to another prisoner for a camera. She was one of 74 Polish women subjected to cruel experiments, including unnecessary surgeries. Doctors cut open some women's legs and intentionally infected them to try to simulate battlefield wounds. Some of the women were given no medication when they became desperately ill. Ravensbrück was liberated on this day in 1945 after most prisoners had been evacuated from the camp. Some of the experimentation victims testified at trials after the war.
