The last execution was in 1964 and before that the numbers of people killed for their crimes had reduced dramatically.
But way before then offenders were executed frequently - not just for serious crimes like murder and rape, but even minor crimes like pick-pocketing.
If you go back to the 18th Century you'll find gruesome cases of children being killed, and women not only hanged, but burned at the stake.
The website Capital Punishment UK has a staggering amount of detail about the records of many of the executions that have taken place in the UK.
Records show public executions of criminals from Greater Manchester as far back at 1735 were carried out on Lancashire Moor, and later Lancaster Castle.
There are also records of public executions in Salford.
But then the grim spectacles moved behind closed doors and from 1869 they took place at Strangeways prison in a special chamber.
For almost a century a total of 100 men and women lost their lives for their crimes. Here is a full list of them, and some of their crimes.
