Joseph Samuel was a scoundrel who was sentenced to capital punishment on September 26, 1803.
At the time the ropes used were made of hemp and could support a weight of 450 kg for 5 minutes. Yet Samuel's rope broke.
The executioner prepared another rope, but it slipped from his neck shortly after he remained suspended in the air.
The executioner prepared yet another rope, forced Samuel to climb on it, tied the noose around his neck and after checking that he had done a good job he opened the trap door... The rope broke again.
At this point the governor intervened and after having inspected the ropes and found no anomalies, decided to commute the sentence to life imprisonment.
