27-year-old Dr Priyanka Reddy, a veterinarian, was kidnapped, rap£d, and killed on the outskirts of Hyderabad. Her charred body was left near an underbridge by the perpetrators.
Hyderabad police have arrested four accused, including the prime suspect, a truck driver named Mohammad Pasha. Pasha hails from Narayanpet in Mahabubnagar district. The other three accused have been identified as Naveen from Gudigandla, a cleaner named Kesavulu and another cleaner named Siva.
As Priyanka Reddy was returning home from work a little after 8 pm to pick her vehicle, she noticed a flat tyre. She immediately called her sister, who suggested that she leave her two-wheeler at the toll plaza and take a cab home. Before she could, two men approached her, who offered to take her vehicle for repair.
According to multiple news reports, the accused saw Reddy parking her vehicle at ORR toll plaza at Tondupally and plotted to abduct her.
Assuming she would return to pick her vehicle, the accused punctured the scooter intentionally. When she picked her vehicle, the accused pretended to help her with the flat tire and later dragged her behind a line of trucks.
Thereafter, the accused tortured, gang-rap£d, and strangulated the victim. The body was transported in a lorry along with her scooter to Shadnagar. Her body was then wrapped in a bedsheet, doused in kerosene and set afire.
According to police, the accused took her body to an under-construction bridge a few kilometres away and set it on fire. The police stated that the victim’s innerwear and some other objects including an alcohol bottle found around 100 metres from the spot led them to believe she was sexually assaulted before being killed.
Reddy was reported missing while returning home from the Tondupally toll plaza on Wednesday night. She had called her sister at 9:22 pm to tell her that she had a flat tire and some strangers were helping her.
She confessed to her sister that she felt scared before going incommunicado. Her charred body was found 25 km away under a culvert in Chattanpally, Shadnagar.
Telangana police disbelieved the parents of Priyanka Reddy when they complained about missing daughter. Reddy’s parents have stated to media that when they insisted that their daughter might be in trouble, the police officer speaking to them had stated that their daughter must have eloped with someone.
Her family was made to run pillar to post between different police stations & wait for several hours before the police searched for their missing daughter. Police initially refused to help them & claimed that she has eloped with someone.
Separately, Telangana Home Minister Mohammed Mahmood Ali resorted to victim-blaming.Speaking to the media, he said the deceased woman who was a doctor should have dialed the emergency police contact first rather than contacting her sister.
There was no response when her parents personally visited multiple Police stations for lodging complaint but instead they have been abused, so what can we expect by calling 100.
Priyanka Reddy case is just a drop in the ocean. It's another wake up call to the fact that 25,000+ rapes are reported annually in India and about 1.5 lakh are still awaiting justice.
It doesn't matter that it was "only 9pm" . It doesn't matter that she was "just returning from work". It doesn't matter that she was a doctor. What matters is that our women regardless of their timing, purpose and occupation need to feel SAFE . Continue reading
