They were treated very differently, primarily due to the nature of their crimes — Jared Fogle, the Subway diet guy, was in jail for crimes related to children. Whereas Bill Cosby was a serial assaulter of grown women.
Cosby was treated well by both inmates and guards, being a popular figure. He was a legendary entertainer, many inmates grew up on his work.
His crimes weren’t seen by other prisoners as being on the same level of depravity as Fogle’s, thus he was given extra food by his prison buddies. He reportedly joked around with them and charmed even the guards charged to overlook them.
Fogle, by contrast, was despised by inmates. He got beaten by them on more than one occasion. Beyond his gimmick — the “Subway diet” where he claimed to have lost a ton of weight by only eating sandwiches from the sandwich chain Subway — he just wasn’t a very charming person. Besides, Cosby actually was quite open about his use of roofies. He joked, openly, about drugging women and getting them drunk and high to have sex with them, blurring the lines of consent. It was all a joke to him, he didn’t care, and well… the other prisoners were there for a reason, too. Some could relate. Others simply forgave him or didn’t care.
Bill Cosby actually had a pretty sweet time in jail. He was in his eighties, blind due to diabetes but still had the legendary charm that got him famous in the first place. He used this to his advantage and was a well-respected figure even when incarcerated. Jared Fogle, by contrast, was a kiddie fiddler and thus lowest on the prison totem pole. Continue reading
