The murder of Jeffrey Curley.
Jeffrey Curley was a 10-year old Cambridge, MA boy who was abducted by Charles Jaynes and Salvatore Sicari after the two men offered to help him with his bicycle on October 1st, 1997. Sicari drove the trio to a gas station where Jaynes sexually assaulted Curley and then fatally smothered him when the boy naturally resisted. The two men then proceeded to drive up to the NH-ME border where they sexually assaulted Jeffrey’s corpse in a Manchester apartment before dumping his body in the Piscataqua River, the area in which I was living at the time. I was only a couple of years younger than Jeffrey. Fortunately, Jaynes and Sicari were caught the next day, and both received life in prison. Jaynes was actually up for parole in 2020, but it was understandably denied.
This case is disturbing for the obvious reasons- who couldn’t be disturbed by child assault and murder? However, the fact that his body was found so close to where I, a boy of the same age range, was living, still gives me chills. In hindsight, this was the true crime case that really brought to my attention what horrible people are out there and that I might be a target. My parents were on high alert after this, and the stranger danger talks started. We all like to think our home is safe, that evil lives far away, but it doesn’t; it’s in our backyards, and we could all be the victim of it if we’re not careful. Continue reading
