The most evil woman in the past 200 years though, IMO

She might not be the most evil woman in ALL of history but she's definetly right up there. She's easily the most evil woman in the past 200 years though, IMO. That evil woman's name is Belle Gunness, A.K.A. Hell's Belle.

Belle Gunness not long after immigrating to the United States from Norway.

Belle was born either Bella Paulsdatter or Brynhild Paulsdatter Størseth, on November 11, 1859 in Norway. She immigrated to Chicago, Illinois in 1881. Eventually she settled down at a small farmhouse she bought in La Porte, Indiana.

The beginning of our story needs to start at the end of her story, her death. On April 28, 1908, police were called to a fire out on Belle's farm. Once the blaze was out the police discovered the bodies of an adult female and three children.

Assuming that the bodies were Belle's and her kids, she was originally portrayed as a hero. They described her in the local paper as a hard working widow with three kids that had tried valiantly to save her children from an accidental fire until she herself succumbed to the flames. With a little digging though, it didn't take long to find out otherwise.

Belle with her three children. It was initially assumed that the bodies burned in the fire at Belle's home were those of her and her children.

It was discovered that Belle was married for the first time in 1884, to a man named Mads Sorenson. Belle and Mads owned a small candy store. Things looked a little odd when both the couple's candy store and home went up in flames, giving them payouts on what were considered to be extremely high dollar insurance policies at the time. It looked even more odd when Mr. Sorenson died shortly after from an apparent brain hemorrhage while also having a large insurance policy that Belle had gotten on him. The insurance company did an investigation but could find no proof that they weren't accidents, so they dropped the investigation.

The second husband/probable victim, and the only man whom Belle would take the last name of, was Peter Gunness. They were married in early 1901. Peter wouldn't make it to 1902. Eight months after marrying Belle, Peter was killed “accidentally” when a meat grinder fell on his head, fracturing his skull. At least thats the story that Belle told police. Again, the police couldn't find any evidence to prove otherwise.

Now let's fast forward again to shortly after Belle's supposed death. A brother of one of the victims came to the farm to search for clues about his missing brother after finding letters with correspondence between the brother and Belle. After searching some, he noticed some loose soil in the pigs pen. The man began digging and came across hands, feet, and to his horror, the severed head of his brother!

After the brother of Belle's final victim found correspondence between the two, he searched the Gunness farm and to his horror, found the decapitated head of his brother buried in the ground under the pig pen.

The man contacted the police and after a further search, bones were found scattered in the ground all over the property. Some in the pig pen, some down by a lake on the property, some were right by the house in the front yard. It's believed that they found all or part of the bones for eleven different people. All the bodies had been dismembered in the same way, decapitated, arms removed at the shoulders, and legs cut off at the knees.

All the bodies had been dismembered in the same way, decapitated, arms removed at the shoulders, and legs cut off at the knees.

It was a grusome scene for those who witnessed it, apparently. Lucas Reilly, a reporter for the local newspaper at the time, said about the scene, “The bones had been crushed on the ends, as if they had been struck with hammers after they were dismembered. Quicklime had been scattered over the faces and stuffed in the ears.”

Eventually, a hired hand of Belle's named Ray Lamphere was arrested for all of the murders, including those of Belle and her children. Ray gave a detailed statement to police confessing to being an accomplice to the murders, but said that the mastermind behind the murders was Belle herself.

He told police the entire story in a confession. He told them that Belle would place ads in different newspapers seeking men for companionship. Once a man had moved out there, she would kill them, rob them, and he would bury the body parts throughout the yard. When the brother of the last victim contacted her about coming to search for clues, she knew the bodies would soon be discovered. Lamphere said she paid him to dig up a female corpse, put it in her house, and set it on fire, with her own children inside. Belle had fled and Lamphere didn't know where she was. The only problem with Lampheres story was the lack of a motive. The men that answered the ads weren't wealthy and didn't bring many possessions with them in the majority of the cases.

A local journalist named Edward Bechly was persuaded by police to try and obtain a second confession from Lamphere in secret, which he supposedly did, but through a second hand account. The police didn't want people to believe this woman had gotten away scot free with murdering all of these men, and her children on top of that. So the details and circumstances surrounding the second alleged confession are shady at best and most people aren't certain of it's authenticity. In the second confession though, Lamphere says that he and Belle were both in on the murders, but that he had ended up killing Belle and her children for unknown reasons, and then burning the house down to try and destroy any evidence. He apparently had an accomplice in the second confession as well, a lady named Elisabeth Smith, who was arrested based solely off the flimsy confession. I assume they were tried and convicted for the murders, but I can't verify that as fact.

Whether Belle escaped justice or not? Exactly how many men she killed? What the motive was behind killing and robbing of these men for so little? These are questions that we'll never be quite sure the answer to. What we are sure of is the fact that Belle was a murderer and definetly one of the most evil women in history. Belle also holds the distinction of being America's first known female serial killer.

The simple fact is that Belle killed a lot of men for almost no reason whatsoever, just a few dollars and the knowledge of what she had done. If that wasn't evil enough, she killed her own children in the most evil and torturous way possible! It doesn't get more evil than killing just for the thrill of it. That's why she's my pick for the most evil woman in history.

Edit Update: After several people commented that Belle wasn’t Americas first serial killer, I’ve retracted that part. This update is WAY WAY overdue, but better late than never. Thank you to everyone that helped me with that info. Continue reading

A group of prisoners documented the medical experimentations that German doctors were performing on them.

This photo was taken secretly inside the Ravensbrück concentration camp. A group of prisoners documented the medical experimentations that German doctors were performing on them. Joanna Szydłowska traded her bread to another prisoner for a camera. She was one of 74 Polish women subjected to cruel experiments, including unnecessary surgeries.  Doctors cut open some women's legs and intentionally infected them to try to simulate battlefield wounds. Some of the women were given no medication when they became desperately ill. Ravensbrück was liberated on this day in 1945 after most prisoners had been evacuated from the camp. Some of the experimentation victims testified at trials after the war. The photos they took were part of the evidence. Continue reading  #OTD #OnThisDayinHistory #Holocaust

In the fall of 1944, ten-year-old Thomas Buergenthal found himself all alone in Auschwitz, destined for the gas chamber

In the fall of 1944, ten-year-old Thomas Buergenthal found himself all alone in Auschwitz, destined for the gas chamber. Thomas had already survived the Kielce ghetto and a forced labor camp by the time German authorities deported him and his parents to Auschwitz in August 1944. Typically, children were taken on arrival and murdered in the gas chambers, but, because there was no selection when Thomas and his family arrived there, he managed to survive. His mother was taken to the women's section of the camp, but Thomas and his father remained together. However, Thomas remained in grave danger. The SS guards regularly selected prisoners to be murdered in the gas chambers and as a child Thomas stood out. While he had survived a number of selections by hiding, this time, Thomas had been caught. "They saw me as a child, and they motioned me to go one way, and my father go the other way," Thomas remembered. "And that's the last I saw of ... my father." Thomas and...

Julie Keefer’s constant cries put her family in danger. In the end, this may have saved her life.

Julie Keefer’s constant cries put her family in danger. In the end, this may have saved her life. After escaping the Lwów ghetto, Julie, her sister, Tola, and their family hid from the Nazis in a forest hideout for several months. Over time, the girls’ crying put the Jewish family at risk. Their grandfather made the painful decision to place two-year-old Julie and baby Tola with a friend. Soon after they were removed, the Germans discovered the hiding place in the woods and murdered everyone inside. Julie’s grandfather, who was away visiting the girls, was the only survivor. Julie never saw her parents again. During the chaos of the war, Julie and Tola were separated, and Tola was sent to a Catholic orphanage. After the Holocaust, Julie and her grandfather desperately searched for Tola but they were unable to locate the baby. Julie never lost hope of finding her sister. Despite all that she lost, Julie chose to share her story with visitors at our Museum. “For many, many years I did no...

In April 1981, the body of a young white woman was found in a ditch on Greenlee Road in Newton Township, Ohio. She was wearing a buckskin poncho, so investigators called her the "Buckskin Girl." That same day, her body was examined. It was found that she had suffered serious injuries to her head and neck before being strangled to death about 48 hours before her body was found. Despite many years of hard work by investigators, the identity of the Buckskin Girl remained unknown for over 30 years. On April 9, 2018, the Miami Valley Regional Crime Laboratory announced that they had identified the woman as 21-year-old Marcia Lenore King from Little Rock, Arkansas. Marcia had last been seen by her family in 1980. Although she wasn’t officially reported missing, her family had kept searching for her. The identification was made possible by detailed DNA testing. Sadly, the person who caused her death has still not been found. Continue reading

“In Auschwitz, I never cried, and people around me never cried.”

“In Auschwitz, I never cried, and people around me never cried.” Irene Weiss was just a teenager when she learned to turn off her feelings in order to survive. When a Nazi officer selected Irene to perform forced labor at Auschwitz-Birkenau, it gave her a chance to survive that was denied to her mother and younger siblings, who were murdered upon arrival. She was assigned to a unit responsible for sorting through the stolen personal belongings of Jews. The storage barracks where she worked were next to one of Auschwitz's gas chambers. Irene often saw the faces of those unknowingly headed toward their deaths. Sometimes they would stop and talk to her. Other times, she heard their screams. “When we worked night shifts … this place was close enough to the train platform that you could hear in the night the whistle of the train and then you would hear the humming noise of large crowds. You could hear people in the distance. Within a few minutes or so the large column of young women, mo...

He was sent to the Treblinka extermination camp, but jumped off the train, therefore escaping almost certain death. He was injured from his jump, but made his way back to Warsaw to continue helping the resistance.  When he returned home, Michał helped sneak food and weapons into the ghetto. On Ap...

Klaus Barbie had no regrets about sending thousands to their deaths.

Klaus Barbie had no regrets about sending thousands to their deaths. He personally tortured members of the French resistance and was responsible for the deportation of thousands of Jews from German-occupied France.  As head of a local office of the Gestapo, the Nazis' political police force, Barbie made a name for himself as the "Butcher of Lyon."  In 1944, he learned that 44 Jewish children were being sheltered in a nearby village. He had the children arrested and sent them to Auschwitz. None survived. Years after the war, and after escaping to South America, Barbie was captured and tried for crimes against humanity. Despite his conviction in 1987, Barbie remained a devoted Nazi, stating: “I am proud to have been a commanding officer of the best military outfit in the Third Reich, and if I had to be born a thousand times again, I would be a thousand times what I’ve been.” Photo: Wikimedia #Holocaust #History
