He then started to make a series of cuts in the tree which caused the tree to fall over a few days later. The Haida people were horrified at his actions, but according to Hadwin it was done in protest against the very logging company owned by his family. The logging companies were up to shady stuff at the time and Hadwin figured he needed to do something about it.
By this time he had left the island returned home and started to send out a fax to all the local media outlets to claim responsibility for the act in question. He was later arrested, but released on bail so that he could return to the Island to stand trial for his crime.
The whole country was outraged by his actions, so he feared taking a ferry back to the Island, just in case he was attacked or even killed. Instead he took a Kayak and departed from Prince Rupert in Canada on his own. He returned home a few days later due a heavy storm, but headed out once the storm dissipated. This was a trip he wasn’t going to return from, as he was never seen again.
The Alarm was raised when he never showed up to court and a search was launched to locate him. Four months later his Kayak and a bunch of his gear was discovered on a uninhabited Island, north of Prince Rupert.
He was considered an expert in wilderness survival, so people figured he faked his own death so he wouldn’t have to stand trial. Other’s think he might have been murdered due to the seriousness of his actions. Or maybe the weather proved to be too strong and he drowned. To this day his disappearance remains unsolved.
