The disappearance of Ray Gricar

Ray Gricar

Ray Gricar was a District Attorney for Centre County, Pennsylvania for 20 years. He was a respected official and known for his tough stances. One day, in 2005, he called his girlfriend to tell her he was out for a drive in the countryside, and then proceeded to never be seen again.

Some time later, authorities found Gricar`s car outside an antiques store with everything but his cell phone missing. There were no signs of a struggle. A search was carried out, and police eventually found Gricar`s laptop in a nearby river, too damaged to recover any files. Meanwhile, his credit cards went unused and his bank account left alone.

And then……

The investigation overturned info that Gricar was, at the time of his disappearance, working on what would later blow up as the Penn State sex abuse scandal. For anyone from overseas who may not have heard much about the case, said scandal involved the equipment manager and head coach of the Penn State football team- Jerry Sandusky and Joe Paterno, respectively- as well as the school`s athletic director and campus police. It was revealed that Jerry Sandusky was sexually abusing young boys at his football camp, and had been for years, the school knew about it, and they and coach Paterno were covering it up.

Ray Gricar was gathering evidence for this case, and had actually opted NOT to prosecute Paterno in 1998, despite having plenty of evidence. The year he went missing, 2005, same thing. Gricar was seemingly building up evidence for the mother of all cases. It certainly seems that Penn State University had something to do with Gricar`s disappearance, given this information and considering he had a bad history with the university. Except….

In 2009, an investigator finally checked Gricar`s home computer, which showed all kinds of searches for “how to destroy a laptop”, “water damage to laptop”, etc. in the search history. Why would Ray Gricar, District Attorney who was working the Penn State sex abuse case, dump his laptop containing all of his evidence in a computer and then vanish?

Ray Gricar has never been found, but the sex abuse scandal blew up anyway in 2011. Joe Paterno died a year later of a brain tumor, and Jerry Sandusky was sentenced to 30–60 years in prison. Continue reading

Joanna Szydłowska traded her bread to another prisoner for a camera. She was one of 74 Polish women subjected to cruel experiments, including unnecessary surgeries. Doctors cut open some women's legs and intentionally infected them to try to simulate battlefield wounds. Some of the women were given no medication when they became desperately ill. Ravensbrück was liberated on this day in 1945 after most prisoners had been evacuated from the camp. Some of the experimentation victims testified at trials after the war. That same day, her body was examined. It was found that she had suffered serious injuries to her head and neck before being strangled to death about 48 hours before her body was found. Despite many years of hard work by investigators, the identity of the Buckskin Girl remained unknown for over 30 years. On April 9, 2018, the Miami Valley Regional Crime Laboratory announced that they had identified the woman as 21-year-old Marcia Lenore King from Little Rock, Arkansas. Marcia had last been seen by her family in 1980. Although she wasn’t officially reported missing, her family had kept searching for her. The identification was made possible by detailed DNA testing. Klaus Barbie had no regrets about sending thousands to their deaths. He personally tortured members of the French resistance and was responsible for the deportation of thousands of Jews from German-occupied France. As head of a local office of the Gestapo, the Nazis' political police force, Barbie made a name for himself as the "Butcher of Lyon." In 1944, he learned that 44 Jewish children were being sheltered in a nearby village. He had the children arrested and sent them to Auschwitz. None survived. Years after the war, and after escaping to South America, Barbie was captured and tried for crimes against humanity.
