I have been living in Byron Bay, for 15 years.
On the 31st of May 2019, Theo Hayez, a belgian backpaker, was last seen outside the Cheeky Monkey, a popular night-club in town.
He vanished into the night.
Few months later, they managed to trace his phone signal to a secluded beach to the South of town. Tallow Beach.
That is a very unusual path.
For someone that is unfamiliar with the location, the track that connects town to Tallow beach is virtually impossible to find, especially in the middle of the night. Maybe he was not alone, or maybe his phone was already in the possession of someone else.
The signal of his mobile phone stops at Cozy Corner. This spot has a very strong rip current. Whatever ends in the water here, in minutes will be dragged outside the cape.
5 months later, Thea Liddle disappeared.
Ms Liddle, 42, was last seen in the Mooball area in northern NSW on October 31, 2019.
Coincidence on the similarity of the name aside, her skeletal remains were eventually found just few hundreds metres from Theo’s last mobile signal.
When I walk through the numerous tracks that lead to the beach, I always wonder, how many other bodies are resting in there. Continue reading
