Most shocking cold case in Utah

On August 26, 1982, in the town of Sunset, Utah, three-year-old Rachael Runyan was abducted from Doxey Elementary School playground by an unknown male assailant. The only witnesses to her abduction were her older and younger brothers. According to her brothers, a man approached the group of children playing in the park offering to buy them candy and ice cream. Rachael began walking away with the man until her older brother, Justin called her to come back. The man grabbed the little girl, shoved her in his car, and drove away. On September 19, 1982, three weeks after her abduction, her lifeless body was discovered in a creek bed in the nearby Morgan County, city of Mountain Green, Utah. Two and half years after her abduction, police discovered a taunting note scrawled on the bathroom wall of a local all-night laundry. The note read “Beware I’m still at large. I killed the little Runyan girl. Remember, beware.“

Prior to the national “AMBER alert” which is a child abduction emergency alert system, Utah had its own statewide emergency notification system named “Rachael Alert”. You guessed it, it was named after the beloved Rachael whose vicious murder was a contributing factor in the 1983 passage of the US Congressional Missing Children’s Act. This act mandated additional resources to investigate missing children cases.

Rachael Runyan‘s abduction led to Utah’s observance of the Rachael Runyan Missing and Exploited Children’s Day. This day, celebrated on August 26 annually, was signed into law in 2017, with the purpose of raising public awareness of missing and exploited children. That date was chosen because it is the date of Rachael’s abduction.

No arrests have ever been made on this case, despite the fact that there was a composite sketch and a description of his vehicle. The perpetrator attempted to kidnap an older boy who aided police in providing a description. In 2012, investigators announced that a prison inmate in Pennsylvania who lived in Sunset, Utah in 1982 is a suspect in Rachael's abduction and murder.

Rachael Runyan is buried at Washington Heights Memorial Park in Ogden, Utah.

On August 13, 1995, Rosie Tapia was taken from her own bedroom in Salt Lake City. Later that day, her naked body was found floating in a canal near her home. Rosie’s hands were tied behind her back and she had been raped. A neighbor, who claimed to be up early, said he saw a teenager walking away from that part of the canal. He provided police with a sketch, but that man was never identified. 20 years later, Rosie’s brother, Robert, said in an interview that he saw a man he did not know in the children’s bedroom the night that Rosie was abducted. There were discrepancies in the description given to the police by the neighbor and the brother.

Joanna Szydłowska traded her bread to another prisoner for a camera. She was one of 74 Polish women subjected to cruel experiments, including unnecessary surgeries. Doctors cut open some women's legs and intentionally infected them to try to simulate battlefield wounds. Some of the women were given no medication when they became desperately ill. Ravensbrück was liberated on this day in 1945 after most prisoners had been evacuated from the camp. Some of the experimentation victims testified at trials after the war. Despite many years of hard work by investigators, the identity of the Buckskin Girl remained unknown for over 30 years. On April 9, 2018, the Miami Valley Regional Crime Laboratory announced that they had identified the woman as 21-year-old Marcia Lenore King from Little Rock, Arkansas. Marcia had last been seen by her family in 1980. Although she wasn’t officially reported missing, her family had kept searching for her. The identification was made possible by detailed DNA testing. He personally tortured members of the French resistance and was responsible for the deportation of thousands of Jews from German-occupied France. As head of a local office of the Gestapo, the Nazis' political police force, Barbie made a name for himself as the "Butcher of Lyon." In 1944, he learned that 44 Jewish children were being sheltered in a nearby village. He had the children arrested and sent them to Auschwitz. None survived. Years after the war, and after escaping to South America, Barbie was captured and tried for crimes against humanity.
