In 2004, before high school teen Craig Frear disappeared in the woods, two schoolboys saw him making a “shhh” gesture at them by putting his finger to his lips. He was never seen again.
17-year-old Craig lived in Glenville, New York, and stood 5′11″ tall. A talented football player and well-known in high school. Among his peers, he was a mutual friend between different friend groups that didn’t always get along. He had a girlfriend in the past. Years before his disappearance, there was an incident where he ran away from home but eventually came back after one night.
On June 27, 2004, Craig visited Cambridge Manor Apartments in his car to meet a friend. For reasons unknown, he left his own phone and wallet at home. Shortly before noon, his mom, Veronica, called his friend’s place and confronted Craig about getting fired from his job (at a supermarket). He had been pretending to go to work without telling his parents he had been fired.
He argued with his mom over the call and told her he would reach home in 10 minutes and explain everything. But he never made any attempt to go home.
Leaving his car in the parking lot, Craig walked behind the apartment complex. Two boys saw him walking along the railroad tracks and making the “shhh” gesture at them. Craig has been missing for over 20 years.
Some suggest he was upset or scared—maybe about his breakup, about his parents finding out he was fired and pretending to be working. There’s another claim that his dad went to Cambridge Manor looking for him, and his friend’s mom saw Craig heading towards the parking lot before abruptly turning around and walking toward the woods. He possibly saw his dad and wanted to avoid being confronted.
Looking at his past behavior—running away before, lying about his job, avoiding going home—it’s possible Craig’s parents were strict with him. Maybe he feared getting in trouble. But his friends said he wasn’t the type to just disappear or hurt himself.
What happened to him, and why the “shhh” gesture, has no explanation.
Theories:
- He was struggling mentally and wanted to hurt himself. Maybe he drowned in a river nearby or got hit by a train. But no remains were ever found.
- He took a train and vanished. Some people think he left intentionally.
- He met with foul play. Maybe he was hanging out with someone near the woods (during his job hours) and got into trouble.
