Singapore is often seen and regarded as that safe country where crime seem to not exist. However, that was never the case and we do have own fair share of gruesome crimes, one of which is aptly called the Curry Murder.
The Curry Murder happened a long time ago back in December 12, 1984. The victim in this murder was Ayakanno Marimuthu.
His murder case won’t be heard of until three years later in January 9, 1987, when word got to a detective, G. Alagamalai, that Ayakanno went missing three years ago. His wife had reported her as missing on December 18, 1984, saying simply that Ayakanno had not returned back from his trip to the Genting Highlands where we wanted to try his luck in gambling.
The story of his murder was indeed gruesome.
Firstly, according to the investigations, Ayakanno was allegedly bludgeoned to death with an iron rod by the three brothers of his wife, Nagaratha Vally Ramiah, namely; Rathakrishnana Ramayah, Shanmugam Chandra, and Balakrishna Ramiah.
After bludgeoning him to death, Ayakanno’s body was dismembered and cut into pieces; his flesh was thrown into a pot of curry that was cooking while his bones were placed into separate black trashbags and disposed of at various roadside bins.

His chopped up flesh were cooked in curry that was masked by chili powder, spices, and rice. Afterwards, the curry was disposed of as well.
The suspects in this murder scene were his wife and her three brothers, the wives of the three brothers, and his own mother-in-law, Kamachi Krishnasamy.
His mother-in-law and his sister-in-law were charged for abetting the crime while the rest of the suspects were also brought to trials, but they were dismissed on the basis of lack of evidence. The three brothers were detained in prison from June 22, 1987, to June 22, 1991, before they were unconditionally released.
To this day, the Curry Murder remains a mystery. With none proven to be the mastermind, no justice had been served yet, and it’s been nearly four decades.
One theory does exist. It’s believed that Ayakanno was killed by his wife’s side of the family as a response to how he often physically abused her. Ayakanno was described as having a short-temper and was often drunk. Nonetheless, this is only a theory and the Curry Murder remains one of Singapore’s most gruesome crime, bizzare crime, and unsolved mystery. Continue reading
