Anthonette Cayedito
Anthonette was abducted from her Gallup, New Mexico home (located along Route 66) in the early morning of April 6th, 1986. In the evening, her mother, Penny, went out with friends and left 9 year old Anthonette along with her younger sister Wendy, and their youngest sister, home with a babysitter.
Penny came back around midnight and sent the babysitter home. Shortly after that, Penny fell asleep. At 3 in the morning, according to Wendy, the girls both heard a knock at the door. Anthonette approached the door and asked who was on the other side. The person, a man, replied that it was her “Uncle Joe.”
That prompted Anthonette to open the door. She was then grabbed by 2 men and thrown into a brown van before they sped off. Wendy, though she didn’t get a good look at their faces, didn’t believe she recognized either of the men. Her mother realized that Anthonette was missing when she awoke in the morning, and called the police.
There were no leads for a year. Then, one day, the Gallup Police Department received a phone call from a girl claiming to be Anthonette Cayedito, and that she was in Albuquerque. Before she could elaborate, a man’s voice was heard, screaming “who said you could use the phone?!” The girl claiming to be Anthonette screamed, and then the call abruptly ended. Penny believed it to be the voice of her daughter, but did not recognize the man’s voice.
Nothing was heard from Anthonette until, supposedly, 4 years later in Carson City, Nevada. There, a waitress encountered a teenager who matched Anthonette’s description who was accompanied by an “unkempt” couple. The girl continuously dropped her utensils onto the floor, and grabbed the waitress’s hand firmly when she returned them to her. After she and the couple left, the waitress found a napkin under the girl’s plate with 2 messages written on it.
“Help me.” “Call the police.”
That was the last time anyone claimed to have heard from Anthonette. She did have an uncle named Joe, who the police interviewed and deemed to not be a suspect. There have been no other named suspects.
Anthonette’s mother passed away in 1999, while her father, Anthony, passed away in 2012.
The police suspect that Anthonette is deceased, but the case remains open.
