A SERIAL KILLER OF A SPECIAL KIND

Pedro Rodrigues Filho, known as Pedrinho Matador (Pedrino the Assassin), was a special serial killer. Despite being sentenced to 400 years in prison for killing 71 people, even though he was credited with over 100 murders, he was very popular with the people.

As Brazilian writer and criminologist Ilana Casoy stated: “Pedrinho is not a vigilante, but an avenger, and that ends up fascinating people. But this is a distorted vision. The problem is that Pedrinho’s victims, just like him, could not afford a lawyer.”

But could we really call him an avenger? No. And the answer was in one of his many tattoos, specifically in a phrase on his left arm: “I kill for pleasure.”

In fact, although his victims were, for the most part, drug dealers, rapists and pedophiles, or at least alleged ones, he did not always follow this rule. In some cases, for example, he killed an inmate because "he did not think like him" or a cellmate because "he snored too much."

In any case, this murderer, I repeat, very popular and beloved, did not care about anyone. Determined to "kill only those who deserved it", there was no degree of kinship or friendship that could make him change his mind.

Among his victims was also his father, whom Pedrinho killed in prison after the latter had murdered his mother with 21 machete blows. Contrary to popular belief, he did not eat her heart. As Pedrinho himself reported: "He hit my mother 21 times, so I stabbed him 22 times. People say I ate his heart. No, I took out his heart, because it was revenge, right? I cut off a piece, chewed it and then threw it away."

Released in 2018 (although he had been sentenced to 400 years in prison, Brazilian law does not provide for life in prison), Pedrinho converted to Christianity and said he was sorry for what he had done. Could we believe him? It seems so, at least according to the writer Andreia dos Santos, who described him as a reborn man, almost a child who wanted to live again.

But someone evidently thought differently, also because he had many enemies seeking revenge. So, on March 5, 2023, he was shot to death by two unidentified men, who shot him from a car. Continue reading

Joanna Szydłowska traded her bread to another prisoner for a camera. She was one of 74 Polish women subjected to cruel experiments, including unnecessary surgeries. Doctors cut open some women's legs and intentionally infected them to try to simulate battlefield wounds. Some of the women were given no medication when they became desperately ill. Ravensbrück was liberated on this day in 1945 after most prisoners had been evacuated from the camp. Some of the experimentation victims testified at trials after the war. Klaus Barbie had no regrets about sending thousands to their deaths. He personally tortured members of the French resistance and was responsible for the deportation of thousands of Jews from German-occupied France. As head of a local office of the Gestapo, the Nazis' political police force, Barbie made a name for himself as the "Butcher of Lyon." In 1944, he learned that 44 Jewish children were being sheltered in a nearby village. He had the children arrested and sent them to Auschwitz. None survived. Years after the war, and after escaping to South America, Barbie was captured and tried for crimes against humanity.
