Despite being a serial killer who is often not talked about, Fish cemented himself as a heinous criminal and an evil bastard in New York during the 1920s when he murdered at least three children.

The story of Fish is one surrounded by myth, so I will do my best to tell it as accurately as possible. What we do know for definite is that Fish's family had a history of severe mental disorders and that he grew up in an orphanage where he endured a lot of physical abuse.

Out of all the categorised serial killers, Fish seems to be one of the most sadomasochistic killers ever profiled. Sadomasochists are people who receive sexual pleasure from inflicting pain or receiving pain, a sadist and a masochist combined.

Fish engaged in these activities to extreme measures, including being spanked with a paddle with pins in it, to literally setting his ass on fire by stuffing cloth in his anus with lighter fluid and lighting it on fire.

As Fish grew up, these behaviours intensified, as he became obsessed with engaging in these activities with children. Fish is documented as having tortured several children but was finally caught by police when he murdered and cannibalised 10-year-old Grace Budd.

Fish admitted to having killed over 100 children, but this is likely untrue. Fish was described as being very mentally unstable and would target vulnerable children, mostly children who were homeless, intellectually disabled or who were African American, as they would not be looked for if they went missing.

It is not understood why killers may cannibalise their victims however, several theories state that it may have to do with the complete power and control of the victims. Another theory states that multiple killers who have experienced severe neglect or abandonment as children sometimes eat their victims so that they feel as if they are together forever.

Fish was executed by electric chair at the age of 65 in 1936. His last words were, "I don't even know why I'm here."

Doctors cut open some women's legs and intentionally infected them to try to simulate battlefield wounds. Some of the women were given no medication when they became desperately ill. Ravensbrück was liberated on this day in 1945 after most prisoners had been evacuated from the camp. Some of the experimentation victims testified at trials after the war. He personally tortured members of the French resistance and was responsible for the deportation of thousands of Jews from German-occupied France. As head of a local office of the Gestapo, the Nazis' political police force, Barbie made a name for himself as the "Butcher of Lyon." In 1944, he learned that 44 Jewish children were being sheltered in a nearby village. He had the children arrested and sent them to Auschwitz. None survived. Years after the war, and after escaping to South America, Barbie was captured and tried for crimes against humanity.
