OnThisDay in 1942, Reinhard Heydrich—one of the chief architects of the Holocaust—drove through Prague on his regular route. But this time, two Czechoslovak agents were waiting for him.
They ambushed Heydrich on his drive and rolled an explosive under his car. Heydrich died from his injuries a few days later.
In retaliation for Heydrich's death, the Nazis unleashed a wave of terror in the occupied Czech lands.
The assassins, Jan Kubiš and Jozef Gabčík, were eventually discovered by the Nazis. Both men died before they could be captured. They are remembered today for their role in the resistance to the Nazis.
