Luis Garavito, the worst serial killer in modern history, who confessed to killing more than 190 children, was eligible for parole in 2023 but died in a hospital.
Luis Garavito confessed to abusing young boys and burying their bodies in unmarked graves and often times mutilated the boys' genitals. He kept the passport photos of the boys he killed as trophies and a calendar with cryptic notes listing his victims. Garavito was arrested on April 22, 1999, after attempting to rape a boy, who was lucky enough to get away.
Garavito is infamously known as "La Bestia" ("The Beast") due to the brutal nature of his crimes.
He confessed to the torture, rape, and murder of 147 young boys, but the actual number of his victims is believed to be over 300.
Garavito typically targeted boys between the ages of 6 and 16, many of whom were homeless or peasant children. He lured them away with small gifts or money before killing them.
He was arrested in 1999 and eventually convicted on multiple counts of murder, receiving a prison sentence of over 1,800 years. However, due to Colombian law and his cooperation with authorities, his sentence was later reduced.
Photos from the crime scene and the victim, Luis Alfredo Garavito, who subjected children aged 6 to 13 years to unthinkable cruelty. Mass graves containing 41 children were found, bottles with lubricants and alcoholic beverages were nearby. Garavito currently has 189 confirmed victims and is eligible for parole in 2023.
