She was studying graphic arts and was only weeks away from finishing college. She was also engaged to John Carter, and the couple had talked about moving to Colorado and beginning a new chapter together.

Then Katelyn disappeared.

On August 14, 2011, Carter called 911 and told police that he could not find his fiancée.

Her car was still outside.

Her keys, purse, dog and other belongings were still at her home.

The only important item missing was her cellphone, which stopped communicating with the network shortly after midnight.

During the 911 call, Carter mentioned that a local festival was taking place nearby and suggested there could have been suspicious people in the area.

At that point, nobody knew what had happened.

Police, family members, friends and volunteers searched for Katelyn for months.

Carter also publicly spoke about wanting her found and said he hoped she was still alive.

But nearly two years later, the search ended in tragedy.

On April 7, 2013, human remains were discovered in a remote wooded area near Cedar Grove, Indiana.

They were identified as Katelyn.

Her death was ruled a homicide, although investigators were unable to determine an exact cause of death.

The condition of Katelyn's remains later gave investigators important clues.

Her skull was found inside a plastic bag, and other remains had been associated with dark plastic landscaping material.

Forensic experts concluded that the condition of the remains suggested Katelyn's body had probably been kept somewhere else for a period of time before being left in Indiana.

Investigators also found several small sharp-force injuries on her wrist.

Over the years, detectives continued reviewing Carter's statements, his movements and other evidence connected to the case.

Police had noticed scratches on Carter's neck shortly after Katelyn disappeared.

Investigators also recovered writings from his former home that prosecutors later considered significant.

The case did not have the kind of DNA or fingerprint evidence people often expect in murder investigations.

Instead, prosecutors described it as a complicated case built largely from circumstantial evidence.

More than 11 years after Katelyn disappeared, the case finally took a major legal turn.

In March 2023, John Carter was arrested and charged with two counts of murder.

He initially pleaded not guilty.

But before his trial could begin, Carter accepted a plea agreement in June 2024.

He pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter.

Under the plea, Carter admitted responsibility for causing Katelyn's death during an assault, while the original murder charges were dismissed.

In July 2024, a judge sentenced him to the maximum sentence available for that charge: three years in prison.

Even after pleading guilty, Carter did not publicly explain exactly how Katelyn died or what happened to her after her death.

That has remained especially painful for her family.

In January 2026, Carter asked a judge to release him early after serving about half of his sentence.

The request was denied.

More than a decade after Katelyn disappeared, her family finally received legal acknowledgment that John Carter was responsible for her death.

But many questions remain unanswered.
